PVC Pipe Leak Repair Tape
What to do when a PVC pipe or fitting suddenly starts to leak and threatens to flood the house?
If the leak is light and it is due to the visible crack of a pipe, you can make a temporary repair to plug the water leak. Before are the PVC pipe leak repair tape methods you might try before the arrival of a real plumber in Surrey.
How to stop this water leak on my PVC pipe
Nothing very complicated in what will follow but make sure you have at least basic supplies for this type of plumbing work.
Indeed, a pipe may be either cracked or pierced. Whatever the outcome will be the same. The water will flow.
If it is cracked, do not underestimate the importance of the damage caused by freezing water pipes. If it is pierced, one must look for the cause. For example, on a wood floor, a nail may have pierced a supply pipe at the time of attachment.
Once the leak is identified, all that remains is to intervene. For this there are 3 options, 3 easy solutions to implement.
A leak on a pierced or cracked PVC pipe? We repair:
Come on, let's go, we will stop this water leak quickly:
3 options are available to you.
Sealing with a bandage "house"
Temporary repair by wrapping the pierced pipe with a piece of plastic, leather or canvas.
Seal with putty
Repair that can continue over time. This is to put an epoxy putty on the leak.
Butcher with anti-leak tape
Repair that can permanently stop a water leak around a pipe but remains unattractive.
Before you start
If the leak is light, that is to say, if it is only a dripping and you think you can get by, put a container under the place where the tube drip and:
- close the tap. a general power supply of the installation,
- open all the faucets and flush the toilets to reduce the pressure of the water in the pipes, which will reduce the leakage to a minimum.
Sealing with a "homemade" bandage
Immediately, drain the pipeline and proceed to an emergency repair.
The advantage with this type of repair is that it is adaptable not only to PVC pipe but to all types of pipes (copper, PER, multilayer).
Seam with a bandage
Cut a piece of garden hose, cook, plastic (some use a piece of toothpaste tube! - see video) of a length exceeding that of the damaged area about five times the pipe diameter.
Split it lengthwise to slide it around the damaged part and hold it tight with hose clamps.
A kind of self-adhesive special adhesive tape is found on the market and sticks on itself, forming an impermeable barrier.
Seal with putty
The extent of frost damage to water pipes depends on their nature.
Lead - metal, nowadays formally prohibited for all water pipes - offered the advantage of supporting the dilation imposed by the frozen water.
The PVC pipe has often replaced and much less ductile.
But the disembarking or cracking of a connection are the first causes of leakage on a pipe. They can result from shock or mechanical stress imposed on the pipes, or from a water hammer due to an overpressure in the pipework.
In any case, you must first look at the entire pipe to see if the damage does not affect other parts. Then, there must be a complete renovation of the damaged part.
Seal a leak with an epoxy repair sealant.
Proposed in different configurations, specific sealants can quickly and effectively seal a water leak. They are available in all DIY stores.
For our demonstration, we opted for packaged putty in sticks (It exists in a tube). Take a suitable mastic for the surface you want to cover.
Wipe and degrease with alcohol at 90 the leakage zone. Using the Emery canvas, make the area rough.
Cut out the amount of sealant needed to cover the cutter leak. To obstruct the leak hard a small pipe, cut a slice 1 to 2 cm wide.
This type of putty is "two-component": resin and hardener, which must be intimately mixed. You must knead the dough for about thirty seconds. Its hue must become uniform. This is done manually.
The clogging operation is very simple. Apply the sealant to the leakage area, which you have cleaned beforehand, and to the entire periphery of the tube. Press hard, smooth the mixture.
After 3 hours of drying, the sealant is completely dry. You can sand it and paint it.
Butcher with anti-leak tape
strips: For all that is PVC perforated pipe, we will use another system ... It is the laying of specific strips that we will wrap around the PVC tube to restore its tightness.
Highly resistant, it permanently repairs leaks (but not aesthetically), cracks and holes on all rigid materials: copper, stainless steel, steel, cast iron, PVC, CPVC, fiberglass, wood, concrete.
Resistant to water, sea and pool water, heating water, fuel oil, gasoline, and diesel.
band leakage preventing-PVC putty-PVC
Fill a bucket or basin.
Cut off the water supply.
Sand (abrade) the area to be repaired and clean it 30 mm around the leak.
Put on the latex gloves usually provided.
Open the sachet.
Immerse the tape roll in water for 10 seconds.
Press the submerged roller several times to let the water in.
Wrap the tape quickly with a slight tension.
Do not offset the band more than 1 cm on either side of the repair (minimum 6 layers on pressurized hoses - a strip removed from its packaging can no longer be used later).
Smooth the repair in the direction of winding to drive off the excess water and obtain a homogeneous surface (approximately).
Hardening in minutes.
Wait 30 minutes before use.
Cleaning the solvent product (alcohol, acetone). The cured product can only be removed mechanically and not chemically.
Color: white and can be painted
Temperature resistance: 125 C continuously.
Pressure rating: 20 bars.
Pipe diameters: up to 50 mm (beyond this, provide a second band). Also suitable for larger non-pressure diameters such as evacuations and downspouts.
Applicable on wet surfaces and even underwater (max. 1 m deep).
Hardening in minutes. Using the repair after 30 minutes.
